Are Dental Implants Painful?

Resources Dental Implants

Hi, there! My name is Dr. Michael Webster, and I’m the Owner and dedicated Implant Dentist here at Kelowna Dental Centre. When we consult with patients, we commonly get asked if dental implants are painful. While some tenderness should be expected following surgery, our patients are often pleasantly surprised to find that they can resume their daily activities, including work, the very next day.

We also customize each patient’s healing and aftercare regimen, ensuring it’s manageable with over-the-counter pain relief options.

Let’s explore more together.

Do Dental Implants Hurt?

When it comes to pain during dental implant surgery, the presence of healthy tissue and the absence of pain-sensitive nerves in the bone where the implant is placed can lead to a generally painless experience. Your fitness for dental implants is something we’ll discuss in-depth during your consultation, so you’ll know exactly whether or not you’re a good candidate for implants before any care takes place.

We also offer a wide range of sedation options to minimize pain during the dental implant procedure. Although you may feel some pressure depending on the chosen sedation method, it will not necessarily be “painful.” Our skilled, experienced team, led by me, will make sure you feel relaxed and comfortable throughout your time in the chair.

After implant surgery, it’s normal to experience minor discomfort, such as tenderness in the cheeks, chin, and under the eyes. Minor gum bruising, pain at the implant site, and minor bleeding may also occur. But rest assured – any pain will be manageable, and we often recommend only standard painkillers like ibuprofen to alleviate any discomfort.

How Long After Dental Implants Can I Eat Normally?

We recommend a soft or liquid diet to protect the surgical site during the first few days post-surgery. This can still include nutritious options like smoothies, soups, yogurt, mashed potatoes, and scrambled eggs. But it’s crucial to avoid excessively hot foods or beverages during this period to prevent harm or irritation to the healing area.

After the first week, our patients gradually introduce softer solid foods into their diet. This may include cooked vegetables, pasta, fish, and well-cooked meats. However, it’s still important to steer clear of hard, crunchy, or chewy foods that can strain the implants or disturb the surgical site.

Four to six weeks post-surgery, most of our patients can incorporate a wider variety of foods into their diet, including firmer textures. Nevertheless, we advise continuing to chew on the opposite side of the mouth to minimize pressure on the implants.

It’s important to remember that each patient’s healing process may differ, and following the specific instructions provided by our team is crucial. We’ll assess your progress and offer personalized guidance on when it is safe for you to resume normal eating habits.

At Kelowna Dental Centre, we always prioritize your comfort and recovery, so don’t hesitate to reach out to us with any questions or concerns.
